Windows has a stable installer and a preview installer. Linux ships as an AppImage on the preview line. Both auto-update through Velopack once installed.

Unsigned binaries. Windows may show an unknown publisher warning.

The Linux channel publishes on the preview line. The AppImage updates itself the same way the Windows installer does.

What you need.

The launcher does not include the game. You need a Steam copy of Space Engineers, and enough room for the launcher plus its crossgen cache.

Game

Space Engineers on Steam. The launcher starts the installed game through a launch option.

Windows

Windows 10 (2004 or newer) or Windows 11, x64. The installer handles the desktop runtime.

Linux

x64 Linux and an AppImage-capable desktop. The same file runs a dedicated server headless.

After the download.

Windows needs one launch argument in Steam. Linux needs the AppImage marked executable and the same kind of argument. The installation guide has both paths, the exact strings and the usual failure cases.

Which channel should I use? Stable if the game is your priority. Preview if you want Linux, the current dedicated-server features, or to test plugin changes before they reach stable.
Verify first if you want to. The release pipeline and source are public. The binaries are unsigned, so the source is the trust anchor. Read it at git.zznty.net.
